May’s Garage was founded in 1977 by my father John May, I took over the business when he finally decided to call it a day and take some well deserved rest.
Coming from a family of petrolheads; my brother has been building hot rods since I was a child, it was inevitable that I would end up working with cars in one way or another. My main passion is custom paintwork, so when I met our now resident artist Mark, through our mutual love of surfing we hit it off straight away. We found we had a lot in common, not least our shared interest in classic Volkswagens, metal flake, and the evolution of custom car culture through the years.
As a team we endeavour to push ourselves to provide you the customer with the best quality service possible, but crucially, we still manage to make time for the fun stuff.
Like many peoples introduction to cars, I started helping my dad at home with many of his ‘interesting’ vehicles. With an enforced hands on approach to fixing things I began building a business as a surfboard shaper and ding repair guy, alongside restoring some of my Volkswagens and continuing to help out with my dad’s classic cars.
While supplying surfboards to some of the shops up and down the east coast in the 90s and working as a surf instructor on the weekends, I met Jonny from May’s garage. It was like a parallel universe, albeit on a grander scale, with him owning far more impressive cars than I’d ever had myself.
With a background in motorcycles, classic cars, and later fixing and restoring my own Volkswagens, I found it pretty easy to fit in with everything at the garage.
I still keep my hand in making the odd surfboard now and then, and I also run www.lowbrowsurf.com - conveniently located right next door to the garage.
